OEM and Custom LED Lighting
from China — A Complete Guide
for Importers and Lighting Brands
What "OEM" Means at TPK — and What It Does Not
OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) in the context of LED lighting sourcing means producing a manufacturer's existing product under the buyer's brand name, with agreed modifications to specification, appearance or documentation.
What OEM at TPK does mean: your brand name on the housing, driver label and packaging; custom housing colours matched to your brand palette; modified wattage, beam angle or cable configuration; your datasheet format and language; and complete omission of the TPK brand from all materials supplied to your customers.
What OEM at TPK does not mean: designing a new product from scratch in your brief alone. For minimum-quantity OEM orders, modifications are applied to TPK's validated production base — the LED modules, drivers, optics and housings that TPK has already certified and tested. This means your customers benefit from 22 years of architectural LED engineering validation without the full development cost.
What Can Be Customised
Any standard RAL colour applied via powder coating to the aluminium housing. Common requests: RAL 9005 (matte black), RAL 7016 (anthracite), RAL 1015 (cream white), custom brand colours. Colour approval sample provided before production.
Lead time: +5–10 days vs standard
Your brand name and logo on housing label, driver label, carton and documentation. TPK branding fully removed. Custom datasheet in your template and language. Certificate documentation prepared with your brand name.
No lead time addition
Non-standard wattage variants within the driver and LED module range — e.g. 25W or 45W where the standard catalogue offers 18W and 38W. Requires photometric measurement sample before production to confirm output specification.
Lead time: +10–15 days for sample
Selection from available optic options beyond the standard beam angles. Available angles vary by fixture series. Custom optic tooling for non-standard angles is possible for orders above 500 units and requires 60+ day lead time for tooling.
Standard optics: no tooling cost
Custom cable length, custom connector type (M12, Wieland, custom industrial connector), pre-wired with specific cable length for your installation system. Useful for integration with existing site infrastructure or installation systems.
Lead time: +5 days vs standard
Non-standard mounting brackets for specific installation conditions — recessed, flush mount, conduit entry, specific angle range. Bracket design is provided as a CAD drawing for approval before fabrication. Sample bracket provided for physical fit test.
Lead time: +15–20 days for bracket
Lead Times by Modification Type
| Modification | Sample Lead Time | Production Lead Time | Certification Impact |
|---|---|---|---|
| OEM branding only | Not required | 15–25 working days | None — ETL and CE unchanged |
| RAL housing colour | 7–10 days (colour approval) | 25–35 working days | None — ETL and CE unchanged |
| Custom cable / connector | Not required for standard connectors | 20–30 working days | None — ETL and CE unchanged |
| Custom wattage | 10–20 days (photometric sample) | 30–45 working days | May require re-test for ETL |
| Beam angle change | 10–20 days (photometric sample) | 30–45 working days | Photometric re-measurement required |
| Custom bracket | 15–20 days (bracket + fit test) | 35–50 working days | None — bracket not certified |
The OEM Process — From Inquiry to Delivery
Certifications on OEM Products
TPK's existing certifications — ETL listing, CE certification, IP67, ISO 9001 and RoHS — transfer to OEM products for modifications that do not affect the certified aspects of the design:
- OEM branding, housing colour, cable length → No certification impact. ETL and CE remain valid. Certificates can be issued with your brand name.
- Wattage modification → May require re-testing for ETL if the wattage change is significant. TPK's engineering team advises case by case. Minor changes within the driver's nominal range typically do not require re-test.
- Beam angle modification → Photometric re-measurement is required for IES file accuracy. No impact on ETL or CE safety certification.
- Connector change → Only requires re-test if the new connector type changes the IP rating of the cable entry. Most standard connector changes do not affect certification.
What Information to Provide for an OEM Quotation
- Base product: TPK model number, or description of the product type and wattage range
- Quantity: units per model, and total quantity if multiple models
- Modifications: housing colour (RAL code), wattage, beam angle, connector type, cable length — specify each change
- Brand and documentation: your brand name, logo file (AI or PDF), required languages for documentation
- Target market: country or region — determines certification requirements
- Certifications required: ETL, CE, both, or other market-specific requirements
- Lead time requirement: required delivery date or acceptable lead time window
- Shipping destination: port or city — required for freight cost calculation
- Payment terms preference: TPK standard is 30% deposit on order, 70% before shipment
