IP65 vs IP66 vs IP67 vs IP68: Which Rating Do LED Wall Washers Need?

An engineering guide to selecting water-ingress protection for outdoor architectural lighting.

Category:IP RatingUpdated:Oct 4,2026Read:11 min

Match the tested protection to the exposure: IP65 or IP66 for the relevant jet-water conditions, IP67 for temporary immersion, and IP68 for declared continuous-immersion conditions. If both jets and immersion are expected, verify evidence for both. Review luminaire safety, environmental evidence and the installed connection system separately.

What an IP Rating Does—and Does Not—Tell You

The IP code helps define how an enclosure resists dust and water under specified test conditions. It is an important part of outdoor luminaire selection, but it does not by itself prove complete fixture safety, corrosion resistance, weathering performance, compatibility with cleaning chemicals or service life.

For architectural lighting projects, select the IP rating according to the actual installation exposure: rain, water jets, cleaning procedures, temporary pooling, continuous submersion, cable-entry conditions and the complete installed connection system.

How to Read the IP Code

In IP65, IP66, IP67 and IP68, the first digit 6 addresses protection against dust ingress. The second digit describes a different water-exposure test category. Water protection must be understood within the relevant test conditions, not as an absolute promise of zero water ingress in every field situation.

RatingWater exposure addressedEngineering check
IP65Water jets under specified test conditionsAssess site exposure, cleaning method, mounting orientation, drainage and installed connections.
IP66Powerful water jets under specified test conditionsReview documented test evidence and wash-down limitations. Do not assume protection against any pressure, distance, temperature or chemical.
IP67Temporary immersion under specified test conditionsCheck pooling duration, drainage and whether jet-water protection is also required.
IP68Continuous immersion under declared conditionsConfirm declared depth, duration, operating state and applicable underwater installation requirements.

IP65 — Water Jets Under Specified Test Conditions

IP65 addresses protection against water jets under the applicable test conditions. It may be appropriate for facade luminaires that will not be submerged, provided the site exposure, cleaning method, mounting orientation, cable entries and installation details are suitable.

Do not interpret IP65 as a universal answer for all outdoor installations. Review expected rain exposure, wash-down procedures, road spray, drainage and the complete connection system before final selection.

For a look at how jet-water testing is carried out in the laboratory, the photos below show the SP-DKP-F170 LED spot light sample through its dust-exposure and water-jet test sequence.

IP66 — Powerful Water Jets Under Specified Test Conditions

IP66 addresses protection against powerful water jets under specified test conditions. It can be relevant where exterior luminaires are exposed to more demanding wash-down procedures or direct water spray.

IP66 does not automatically establish temporary-immersion protection. If an installation can also experience pooling or immersion, verify the documented protection for both exposures and confirm the corresponding marking, such as IP66/IP67 where applicable.

Where pressure washing is planned, compare the cleaning pressure, nozzle distance, water temperature and chemicals with the documented test conditions and the manufacturer’s cleaning instructions. An IP66 rating alone does not approve every pressure-washing procedure. The LWW-WZB-W55 may be reviewed as an IP66 product example, with its configuration and permitted cleaning conditions checked against the project requirements.

IP67 — Temporary Immersion Under Specified Conditions

IP67 addresses temporary immersion under specified test conditions. It can be relevant where water may pool around a luminaire or where short-term immersion is a credible installation risk.

An IP67 immersion rating does not automatically establish IP65 or IP66 jet-water protection. Where high-pressure cleaning or powerful water jets are expected, verify the required jet-water test separately.

The photographs below illustrate water-jet testing of a LWW-OP-D80 sample. They do not establish IP67 immersion performance; temporary-immersion protection requires the corresponding test evidence.

IP68 — Continuous Immersion Under Declared Conditions

IP68 applies to continuous immersion under conditions declared by the manufacturer. The depth, duration, operating state and installation conditions must be checked because IP68 is not one universal test level.

For underwater fixtures, verify the declared depth and duration, applicable luminaire safety requirements, electrical system, cable entries and the complete installation method. IP68 alone does not replace underwater luminaire safety and installation requirements.

Choose an IP Rating for the Installation Conditions

For facade luminaires that will not be submerged, assess IP65 or IP66 against the site exposure and approved cleaning procedure. Where water can pool or the luminaire will operate underwater, verify immersion protection for the intended depth, duration and operating conditions, together with drainage and installation requirements.

If both water jets and temporary immersion are expected, do not assume that the higher number covers both test categories. Verify documented evidence for both exposures and the corresponding marking.

IP Rating Is Not a Complete Outdoor-Durability Claim

An IP rating alone does not establish complete luminaire safety, weather resistance or service life. Review the applicable luminaire safety requirements, destination-market requirements, and evidence for temperature, corrosion, UV exposure, impact resistance, driver reliability and sealing where relevant to the project. Cable entries, connectors, junction boxes and installation details must also suit the environment.

State performance and service-life claims with their supporting model, configuration, conditions and evidence. Warranty coverage is a separate commitment defined by its formal terms.

North American Facade Projects: Check Damp and Wet Location Suitability

For facade-lighting projects in the United States and Canada, an IP rating and location suitability answer different questions. An IP report documents enclosure protection under specified test conditions; it does not, by itself, establish suitability for a North American wet location. Conversely, a wet-location marking does not establish a particular IP rating.

Dry, Damp and Wet: Assess the Actual Exposure

A dry location is not normally subject to dampness or wetness, although temporary dampness may occur in some circumstances.

A damp location is normally or periodically subject to moisture or condensation. A sheltered outdoor mounting position may qualify where it is protected from direct rain and other direct water exposure.

A wet location is exposed to water dripping, splashing or flowing onto or against the electrical equipment. For an exposed facade wall washer, assess direct rain, wind-driven rain, splash and cleaning water at the actual mounting position.

A canopy alone does not make a position a damp location. Condensation alone does not automatically make it a wet location either. Check the actual exposure, then confirm that the luminaire's location-suitability markings and installation restrictions cover that use.

Check the Destination Market and Product Documentation

For U.S. projects, check the applicable National Electrical Code (NEC / NFPA 70) requirements. For Canadian projects, check the Canadian Electrical Code, Part I (CSA C22.1), and applicable provincial or local requirements. Product evaluation may involve UL 1598 and, for Canada, CSA C22.2 No. 250.0, depending on the luminaire and certification scope. Confirm the applicable standard for the actual product; do not assume that every outdoor lighting product falls under the same standard.

Before specifying a facade fixture, verify:

  1. The certification covers the exact luminaire model, configuration and destination market.
  2. Its location-suitability marking covers the intended installation environment, including wet-location suitability where required.
  3. Any restrictions on mounting orientation, covered installation or installation method are satisfied.
  4. Cable entries, connectors, sealing details and installation instructions match the evaluated configuration.
  5. The project specification and the local authority having jurisdiction do not require additional measures or documentation.

Use IP evidence and location-suitability documentation together. Neither should be treated as a substitute for the other, and a reference to a standard is not proof that a specific TPK product is certified to it.

How to Describe Outdoor Luminaire Standards

IEC 60529 defines enclosure IP protection; it is not the complete standard for outdoor luminaire safety or service life. For project selection, verify the applicable luminaire safety requirements, project specifications, destination-market rules and the actual scope of the product reports before making a specific compliance statement.

Conclusion

Choose IP protection by matching documented tests to the real exposure. For outdoor architectural lighting, the correct decision is not “the highest IP number available.” It is the rating, luminaire safety evidence, connection system, material performance and installation method that match the project environment.

FAQ

Q1

Is IP67 automatically better than IP66 for outdoor facade lighting?

No. IP66 addresses powerful water jets, while IP67 addresses temporary immersion. Choose the documented protection required by the installation. If both exposures are expected, verify both tests and the corresponding marking.

Q2

Does an IP rating prove a five-year outdoor service life?

No. The IP code alone does not establish service life. Review stated performance conditions, thermal and environmental evidence, driver reliability, cable entries, corrosion protection and maintenance requirements. Warranty coverage is a separate commitment defined by its terms.

Q3

When should IP68 be specified?

Specify IP68 when the luminaire will operate under continuous immersion and the manufacturer has declared conditions that match the project depth, duration and operating requirements. IP68 alone does not replace applicable underwater luminaire safety and installation requirements.
