IP65 vs IP67 vs IP68 — Which Rating Do You Actually Need?

What each IP rating means in engineering terms for outdoor architectural lighting — and which one to specify.

The IP code determines whether your fixture survives five years of outdoor exposure or fails in the first rainy season. For permanent outdoor architectural lighting — building facades, bridges, hotels and landscape — IP67 is the recommended default. IP65 only suits genuinely sheltered positions; IP68 is for submersion risk.

What the IP Code Actually Means

The first digit is almost always 6 for outdoor architectural fixtures — fully dust-tight, no dust enters regardless of exposure duration. Any fixture rated IP65, IP67 or IP68 has the same dust protection; the difference is entirely in the second digit, which describes water protection under IEC 60529.

IP65 — When Is It Enough?

IP65 survives water jets projected from a nozzle in any direction — in practice, direct rain and garden-hose spray. It does not cover sustained water pressure from building-facade cleaning machines, road spray from passing vehicles, or any scenario where water pools around the fixture.

IP65 is appropriate only for fixtures mounted in genuinely sheltered positions — under a deep soffit, inside a recessed architectural reveal, or in a protected internal courtyard. For anything exposed to the outdoor environment, IP65 carries meaningful failure risk over a five-year installation period.

IP67 — The Correct Default for Outdoor Architectural Work

IP67 means the fixture can be immersed in water to 1 metre depth for 30 minutes without water entering the housing. In practical terms this covers building facades (heavy rain, typhoon-condition wind-driven rain, high-pressure cleaning jets, ice melt pooling at the mounting point), bridges (road spray, river mist, deck flooding, water tracking along structural elements) and hotel/resort landscapes (tropical monsoon rainfall, irrigation overspray, high humidity).

IP68 — When Submersion Is a Real Risk

IP68 specifies continuous submersion beyond the IP67 limit. There is no single IP68 standard — the exact depth and duration are defined by the manufacturer, so always check the specification: a fixture rated IP68 (3 m / 4 h) is very different from one rated IP68 (0.5 m / continuous).

Specify IP68 for in-ground fixtures in flood-prone areas, below-waterline bridge illumination, and fountain or pool lighting where the fixture operates submerged — always with a manufacturer-specified submersion depth that exceeds the application depth.

Coastal and Marine Environments — IP Is Not the Whole Answer

On coasts and in marine environments, IP67 addresses water ingress but not salt-air corrosion. Specify marine-grade surface treatment on aluminium housings and stainless steel fasteners, and verify corrosion resistance under IEC 60068-2-52 salt mist testing. The IP code alone is not sufficient for coastal projects.
